How is CELPIP scored, and what is a passing score?

CELPIP reports a separate level for each skill. Listening and Reading use right-or-wrong answers; Speaking and Writing use rating dimensions. There is no universal passing score.

Understand the level before interpreting the number

CELPIP’s Test Results page lists levels from 0 to 12, plus NA. For levels 3–12, the CELPIP number matches the Canadian Language Benchmark number: level 7 is CLB 7, for example. Level 2 corresponds to CLB 1–2. Keep the actual component labels beside your results so that a strong Reading result does not obscure a weaker Speaking result.

The published descriptors distinguish adequate proficiency at 7, good proficiency at 8 and effective proficiency at 9. Higher levels include highly effective at 10, advanced at 11 and expert at 12. These descriptions summarize language performance; they do not tell you how many difficult words to insert into an answer.

Use the CELPIP score chart to compare levels. In your own study record, maintain four columns rather than a single headline number. Add the date and whether each entry comes from an official report or an unofficial practice estimate.

Listening and Reading: approximate raw scores

According to CELPIP’s Test Results page, Listening and Reading are computer-scored. Answers are right or wrong, and a blank counts as wrong. The published ranges below are approximate correct-answer totals out of 38. They are useful for interpreting practice, but they cannot determine the official result of a different test form.

CELPIP levelListening /38Reading /38
10–1235–3833–38
933–3531–33
830–3328–31
727–3124–28
622–2819–25
517–2315–20
411–1810–16
37–128–11

Record missed questions by cause as well as total. Confusing a speaker’s final decision with an earlier suggestion calls for a different exercise from misunderstanding a word. A total tells you where you finished; the errors help you decide what to practise next.

Why do the raw score ranges overlap?

CELPIP’s Test Results page explains that test forms are equated. The raw score associated with a level can therefore vary between forms. For example, 31 correct Listening answers sits inside both the published level 7 and level 8 ranges. Treating 31 as a guaranteed level would discard that qualification.

The same caution applies at the top of the table. A combined 10–12 row does not provide separate cut-offs for 10, 11 and 12. You cannot recover those distinctions by dividing the row into equal pieces or borrowing a conversion from another practice provider.

Our score calculator offers practice interpretation, not official equating. Keep the raw total alongside any estimate it produces. Compare fresh attempts completed under similar conditions, and review uncertain correct answers too: an answer you guessed successfully may still expose a comprehension gap.

Speaking and Writing: dimensions and factors

CELPIP’s Test Results page and Performance Standards describe four dimensions for each productive skill. The table is a review framework. It does not assign a fixed number of marks to individual phrases or allow you to calculate an official level by counting grammar errors.

DimensionSpeaking factorsWriting factors
Content/CoherenceNumber, quality and organization of ideas; examples and supporting detailsDevelopment and organization of ideas; supporting details
VocabularyWord choice, precision, accuracy, range and suitable useWord choice, precision, accuracy, range and suitable use
Listenability / ReadabilityRhythm, pronunciation, intonation, pauses, interjections, self-correction, grammar and sentence varietyFormat, paragraphing, connectors, transitions, grammar, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation
Task FulfillmentRelevance, completeness, tone and lengthRelevance, completeness, tone and word count

For a practical review, point to evidence. “My request comes after three unrelated sentences” identifies an organization problem. “My vocabulary is bad” does not identify a revision. Check the whole response before polishing one sentence, because an accurate sentence can still answer the wrong question.

Trained raters, agreement and writing AI

CELPIP says trained raters assess Speaking and Writing, several raters rate each performance, and rater agreement is monitored. Its FAQ, in the July 21, 2026 snapshot, describes Writing as using an “AI-human hybrid system” and says all writing scores are reviewed by the rating team.

That official process is separate from automated practice feedback. A practice tool’s number does not become an official result because both processes involve AI. Read the AI scoring guide before using an estimate to judge readiness.

Use feedback as a question to investigate: where does the argument become unclear, which request is missing, or which sentence needs repair? For Speaking, listen to the recording as well as reading any transcript. A readable transcript alone cannot tell you whether pauses, pronunciation or rhythm made the spoken message hard to follow.

CELPIP passing score: minimums depend on the purpose

CELPIP’s FAQ states that there is no pass or fail. The table summarizes language minimums from IRCC’s Express Entry language test, PGWP language results and citizenship language-proof pages. This is a comparison of published thresholds, not advice on which program to choose. Check the IRCC page before you apply.

Published useMinimum CLB
Federal Skilled Worker7 in all four abilities
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 0/17 in all four abilities
Canadian Experience Class, TEER 2/35 in all four abilities
Federal Skilled Trades5 Speaking/Listening; 4 Reading/Writing
PGWP university degree programs, applications from November 1, 20247 in all four abilities
PGWP college programs, applications from November 1, 20245 in all four abilities
Citizenship, ages 18–544 Speaking/Listening

IRCC’s Express Entry page accepts CELPIP-General, not LS; its citizenship page accepts General or General LS. For those test-version requirements. Meeting a language threshold alone does not establish that an application meets every requirement.

Do not use the Average Score as a CLB level

CELPIP’s FAQ says the report’s Average Score is not a CLB level and is not used by IRCC. Keep that distinction visible when discussing a result with someone helping you prepare.

For example, a practice profile with three stronger abilities and one weaker ability still needs a plan for the weaker component. Writing the four results separately prevents an average from hiding that problem. Identify the target beside each skill, then choose exercises that address the gap you can actually observe.

If the result surprises you: re-evaluation

CELPIP’s Test Results and Policies & Forms pages allow one re-evaluation per component within six months of the test date, for a fee paid when applying. The purchase is final, and results take about one to two weeks. Listening and Reading are unlikely to change because they are computer-rated.

The refund wording differs: the results page describes a component whose level changes, while the policies page describes an increase in Speaking or Writing. Read the current terms before paying. Keep your original report and the application details together so you can compare the outcome accurately.

A re-evaluation request and a study plan serve different purposes. While considering the published process, review what your practice recordings or drafts actually show. Use the results guide for reporting details and avoid treating a disappointing result as proof that the scoring process was wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a CELPIP passing score?

CELPIP has no pass or fail. A required level depends on the purpose; for IRCC requirements.

Is CELPIP 7 the same as CLB 7?

Yes. CELPIP levels 3–12 match the same CLB number, so CELPIP 7 corresponds to CLB 7.

Does 31 in Listening guarantee level 8?

No. Published raw score ranges overlap because forms are equated, and 31 falls within more than one range.

Is Writing scored only by AI?

No. CELPIP’s FAQ describes an AI-human hybrid system and says all writing scores are reviewed by the rating team.

Can I request re-evaluation of one component?

CELPIP allows one re-evaluation per component within six months of the test date, for a fee. Read the current terms, including the refund conditions, before applying.
