CELPIP vs PTE Core

Neither CELPIP nor PTE Core is objectively easier for everyone. Compare your performance on practice tasks and convert each ability to CLB before deciding which test suits your skills and format preferences.

CELPIP or PTE Core: compare your target first

Use CLB as the common reference when comparing these tests. CELPIP-General reports levels that map directly to CLB in the table below; PTE Core reports scores that IRCC groups into CLB ranges. A larger number on one scale does not represent a harder target than a smaller number on another.

IRCC lists both CELPIP-General and PTE Core for Express Entry. Confirm the exact test name and requirements on the IRCC language test page. Rules change, and this guide does not advise which immigration program to pursue.

This comparison is published by Certloom Learning, maker of CELPIP Practice Test: AI Score, also called CLB Mock. Our preparation content focuses on CELPIP. The decision should still come from your own needs and practice evidence.

CELPIP vs PTE Core score chart: CLB 4–10+

Choose a CLB row, then read the column for the ability you are checking. PTE Core ranges differ across speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Do not carry a range from one column into another, even when the scores look similar.

9984–8882–8878–8788–89
10+10+89+89+88+90+

For example, CLB 9 corresponds to PTE Core speaking 84–88, listening 82–88, reading 78–87, and writing 88–89. CELPIP-General level 9 corresponds to CLB 9 in each ability. These equivalencies describe how IRCC interprets results; they do not predict your score on a second test. For help reading CELPIP results and practice estimates, see the score chart guide.

What can you compare beyond the score scale?

CELPIP is computer-delivered and uses Canadian English contexts and accents. Its speaking responses are recorded at the computer. Practise that experience before treating it as an advantage: some learners find it straightforward to speak into a microphone, while others need time to become comfortable developing a response without interaction.

PTE Core uses a different reporting scale, with the ability-specific ranges shown above. Inspect its current practice material to decide how its tasks suit you. This page does not make claims about PTE Core task formats, test duration, fees, or scoring technology.

Keep the comparison specific. You can reasonably say that you found a particular practice task comfortable or difficult. That observation is more useful than assuming either test is easier because of how its result is expressed or because someone described it as a good choice.

Who might prefer CELPIP or PTE Core?

CELPIP may suit you if you like its practice tasks, find Canadian everyday contexts familiar, and feel comfortable recording spoken answers at a computer. The direct level-to-CLB relationship may also make your study notes easier to read. None of those preferences removes the need to practise all four abilities.

PTE Core may suit you if its practice material feels more manageable and your review identifies gaps you can work on. If you have already developed a productive routine with that material, consider what you would gain by changing tests before starting over.

When your impressions are mixed, look at the ability that needs the most attention. An enjoyable reading session should not hide difficulty completing a spoken response. Describe the problem in ordinary language, such as losing the main idea or leaving an answer unfinished, so you can choose a useful exercise next.

Common mistakes when converting PTE Core to CLB

The safest way to use the table is to label every score with its ability before looking up the range. A row gives four separate conversions, so an unlabeled number can lead to the wrong conclusion.

  • Using the speaking range to interpret a writing score.
  • Assuming one combined number establishes the same CLB in every ability.
  • Treating a practice estimate as a reported test result.
  • Assuming a conversion predicts what you would score on CELPIP.
  • Using information for a different test name instead of PTE Core.

As a worked example, a hypothetical PTE Core reading score of 79 falls in the CLB 9 reading range, while a writing score of 79 falls in the CLB 8 writing range. The number is identical; the ability changes the conversion. Check current IRCC information before relying on any conversion for an application, because rules change.

How to choose between CELPIP and PTE Core

  1. Confirm the exact test accepted for your purpose using current IRCC information.
  2. Write your targets as four separate ability levels.
  3. Translate those targets through the table without averaging them.
  4. Try a free practice test for each option and follow the resource’s instructions.
  5. Record task comfort, unfinished work, and the causes of mistakes.
  6. Choose a preparation routine you can sustain, then check current provider booking information.

For a fair comparison, keep notes on what you did without help. Reviewing a model response is useful study, but your next independent attempt tells you more about whether the lesson has carried over. Avoid choosing from a single good or bad response if the rest of your evidence points elsewhere.

Once you decide, give your study sessions a clear focus. Repeatedly reconsidering the test can consume the time you intended to spend improving English.

Build a preparation plan from your practice results

If you choose CELPIP, begin with the free practice guide, then use the 30-day study plan to schedule review. Work from the mistakes you actually made: for example, revising an unclear paragraph or replaying a response that ended before you explained your reason.

The score calculator can help interpret practice performance, but its estimates are not reported test results. CLB Mock’s AI feedback estimates a CELPIP level (approximately CLB) range from a transcript and timing metrics. Listenability, including pronunciation, is only estimated from fluency metrics; see the AI scoring explanation.

If IELTS General Training is also on your shortlist, use the IELTS comparison to check its ability-by-ability conversion. Keep the same decision method across your options so that one unfamiliar score scale does not distort your choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is CELPIP easier than PTE Core?

Neither is objectively easier for everyone. Try practice tasks for both and compare your weaker abilities, task comfort, and preparation needs.

What PTE Core score equals CELPIP 9?

For CLB 9, IRCC lists PTE Core speaking 84–88, listening 82–88, reading 78–87, and writing 88–89. CELPIP-General level 9 maps to CLB 9 in the corresponding ability.

Does the same PTE Core score mean the same CLB in every skill?

Not necessarily. For example, 79 is in the CLB 9 reading range but the CLB 8 writing range, so always check the correct ability column.

Can I use PTE Core for Express Entry?

IRCC lists PTE Core as an accepted English test for Express Entry. Rules change, so check the current IRCC language test page and the requirements for your purpose.
