Subject: The tool library on Saturday

Hi Dev,

Thanks again for offering to help at the tool library this weekend. I know you only signed up last month, so I wanted to give you a few details before Saturday instead of throwing you in at the deep end.

We open at 10, but volunteers usually arrive around 9:30 to unlock the shed and set out the returns table. Gord normally does the unlocking, but he’s at his daughter’s hockey tournament in Moncton, so I’ll leave the spare key with the front desk at the community centre. Just give them your name.

Most of the morning is check-outs. Members scan their card and the tool, and the system prints a slip with the due date. The one thing the system can’t do is check the condition of a tool when it comes back, so please look over every return before it goes back on the shelf. If anything is damaged, put it in the red bin and leave a note. Please don’t try to fix it yourself, even if it looks simple; we had a pressure washer “repaired” last spring that ended up costing more than a new one.

Lastly, the snow blowers are popular this time of year and we only have two. People will ask you to hold one for them. I know it’s tempting to say yes, but we have a strict first-come, first-served rule, so the best thing is to point them to the online waitlist.

Call me if anything comes up. I’ll be at my desk most of the morning.

Marisol

1 Why is Marisol writing to Dev?
Answer and explanation

To prepare him for his first shift. She says Dev only signed up last month and she wants to give him details “before Saturday”. That is preparation for a first shift.

2 Who will open the shed on Saturday?
Answer and explanation

Dev. Gord is away, and the key is left at the front desk for Dev to collect. The front desk only holds the key.

3 What does the check-out system NOT do?
Answer and explanation

Check whether returned tools are damaged. “The one thing the system can’t do is check the condition of a tool when it comes back.”

4 What should Dev do with a damaged tool?
Answer and explanation

Put it in the red bin with a note. She asks him to put damaged tools in the red bin and leave a note, and not to fix anything himself.

5 Why does Marisol mention the pressure washer?
Answer and explanation

To show why volunteers should not do repairs. The story of an expensive “repair” supports her request not to fix tools. Questions like this test the purpose of a detail.

6 If a member asks Dev to hold a snow blower, he should…
Answer and explanation

tell them about the online waitlist. The rule is first come, first served, and she says the best thing is to point people to the online waitlist.

What your score means

Six questions are too few for a reliable level, but the pattern matters: if you missed questions about the purpose of a detail (question 5), practise reading for why the writer says something, not only what. Turn a full section’s raw score into a level with the CELPIP score calculator, and see the score chart for the published ranges.

Want a longer session? The CELPIP mock test adds a second reading part, Writing Task 2 and two more speaking tasks. For the full official experience, take CELPIP’s own free practice tests too.
