CELPIP-General LS: Listening and Speaking for citizenship

CELPIP-General LS tests Listening and Speaking only and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. It is used for Canadian citizenship language proof; check IRCC’s current requirements before booking.

What is CELPIP-General LS?

CELPIP-General LS contains the Listening and Speaking components of the General test. It does not include Reading or Writing components. The shorter format concentrates preparation on understanding spoken English and responding to speaking tasks.

ComponentContentTime
Listening38 questions across six parts46–55 minutes
SpeakingEight tasks15 minutes
Total sittingListening and SpeakingAbout 1 hour 10 minutes

The Listening parts and Speaking tasks are the same as in CELPIP-General, so preparation for those components applies to LS as well. Reading remains practically useful: candidates need to read Listening answer choices and Speaking questions even though there is no separate Reading component.

What language level does IRCC publish for citizenship?

IRCC’s citizenship language-proof page says applicants aged 18–54 must provide proof of CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening. CELPIP-General LS and CELPIP-General can be used as language proof under the applicable requirements.

For CELPIP tests taken on or after April 1, 2014, the published threshold is level 4 or higher in Listening and Speaking. Treat the two abilities separately when reviewing a result; this is not a combined average target.

Does IRCC accept expired language test results?

IRCC’s citizenship guidance accepts expired test results when they meet the relevant language-proof requirements. Its language-results checklist explains the CELPIP score requirement by test date and explicitly includes expired results.

Read that checklist in the context of your documents. This citizenship provision should not be assumed to apply to another purpose with different rules. Check the current IRCC instructions for the use you are researching.

For preparation, keep document questions separate from practice feedback. A practice result or an app estimate is not a test report and does not establish whether a document meets IRCC’s requirements. Use practice to identify language skills to work on.

CELPIP-General LS vs CELPIP-General

The main format difference is the set of abilities tested. LS concentrates on Listening and Speaking, while General also includes Reading and Writing. Confirm the required test name against the instructions for the purpose you are researching.

Do not infer that a shorter test is suitable for every purpose. Use the current source requirements to settle the test format, then build a practice plan around its components.

How much does CELPIP-General LS cost in Canada?

The CELPIP citizenship page showed a Canadian LS fee of CAD 199 + taxes in the October 4, 2026 snapshot. Check celpip.ca for the current price before booking. The comparison above uses the same snapshot date for General.

Use the date when comparing information you have saved elsewhere. A fee copied into a study note can outlive the price on the booking site. Keep the provider’s current listing as your reference when making a booking decision.

CLB Mock is an unofficial preparation resource published by Certloom Learning. The test fee shown here describes the test provider’s charge; it is not a price for the CLB Mock app or a promise about booking availability.

How to prepare for CELPIP-General LS Listening

Begin with the six-part Listening guide. Practise understanding the main point, locating specific information and making inferences from what speakers say. Keep track of changed plans and differences between speakers’ opinions.

Use a single play of the recording for a timed attempt. In Parts 1–3, practise listening to the question and reading its answer choices within the question time. In Parts 4–6, practise working through the sentence-completion set under a shared timer.

Afterwards, review why an answer fits. If you followed the vocabulary but missed a decision, work on the sequence of the conversation. If you mixed up speakers, try a clearer note layout. Match the next practice activity to an observed difficulty instead of repeating whole sets without reviewing them.

How to prepare for CELPIP-General LS Speaking

The Speaking hub explains the eight tasks and links to individual practice prompts. Use the task’s preparation and response times, record your answer and listen back before trying again. Check whether you answered the actual question and gave enough supporting detail.

Review Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. For speaking, grammar is part of Listenability alongside rhythm, pronunciation, intonation and delivery. Notice whether hesitation interrupts meaning and whether your examples support the main message.

If using CLB Mock’s AI feedback, treat it as an estimated CELPIP level range, approximately aligned with CLB, derived from a transcript and timing metrics. Listenability, including pronunciation, is only estimated from fluency metrics. The AI scoring guide explains those limits; listening to your own recording remains useful.

Build an LS study routine around your weaker ability

Try a Listening practice set and several different Speaking tasks to identify where you need work. Keep a brief record of the difficulty: missing a speaker’s attitude, losing the final decision, giving too little detail or running out of response time.

Choose a focused exercise for that difficulty, then return to a timed attempt. For speaking, you might practise explaining a reason with an example before recording a complete response. For listening, review the language that signals a changed plan before trying another conversation.

Use the preparation guide to organize practice and the score chart to understand score context. Keep source requirements, test results and practice estimates distinct when deciding what information to rely on.
