CELPIP test day checklist: before, during and after

Bring the original, valid, unexpired ID you registered with and your confirmation email, and arrive 45 minutes before your CELPIP test. Check-in closes 15 minutes before the start; CELPIP says late arrivals receive no entry, refund or transfer.

Your checklist from the day before to departure

CELPIP’s Test Day Information sets out the arrival, identification and room rules below. We checked them on 2026-10-19 using the 2026-10-04 snapshot. Confirm the current instructions on celpip.ca before your sitting. Use this checklist to organize the practical steps, then read the details that apply to your documents and equipment.

WhenWhat to check or do
Day beforeMatch your original ID to registration; save the confirmation email; plan the route
MorningBring that ID and digital or printed confirmation; aim to arrive 45 minutes early
Check-inBe ready for identity and security checks, signature and photograph
In the roomUse provided equipment and notepaper; raise your hand for help
After the testReturn pen and notepaper; report test-day issues in your account within 24 hours

Keep the checklist short enough to use on the morning itself. Put unresolved questions, such as whether your document is accepted in the test country, on a separate list to settle before travelling.

The day before: check the exact ID you registered with

CELPIP’s test-day page requires the original, valid, unexpired identification used for registration. The name and document number must match the registration. Accepted documents vary by country. For immigration purposes, this is typically a passport booklet; Canada also lists a permanent resident card and specified refugee travel or protection documents, among other accepted IDs.

Check the current accepted-ID list for your test country rather than treating those examples as a complete list. CELPIP says photocopies, expired documents, health cards and student or employee IDs are not accepted. A photograph of your passport is not the original document the rule requires.

Place the document beside your confirmation and compare the details carefully. If something does not match, contact CELPIP before test day instead of arriving with a substitute and hoping it will be accepted. Save the confirmation email for digital access or print it. The test-day page asks you to bring it in either form.

The morning: plan around arrival, not the start time

CELPIP’s test-day page says to arrive 45 minutes before the test, with check-in closing 15 minutes before the start. Late arrival means no entry, refund or transfer.ca and read your confirmation before leaving.

Work backwards from the requested arrival time when planning travel. Check the centre address and how you will reach its entrance, then allow for uncertainty in your own route. If someone is driving you, share the arrival target with them so they do not plan around the test’s start time.

Keep your original ID and confirmation easy to retrieve for check-in. Avoid using the journey for a difficult new practice exercise that leaves you distracted when you arrive. A brief review of the component order and timing is a more manageable final reminder than trying to learn a new response structure at the entrance.

Check-in: personal items, security and the photo

According to CELPIP’s Test Day Information, ID is the only personal item allowed in the testing room. Put other belongings in a bag or locker and switch devices off. Staff check pockets, sleeves and glasses, and some centres use a metal-detector wand. Follow the staff’s instructions rather than assuming your usual desk items can remain with you.

Check-in includes a signature and a photograph. Your face must be fully visible; head coverings are removed unless worn for religious or medical reasons. CELPIP says the photograph appears on your score report. Knowing these steps beforehand lets you concentrate on following the instructions when you arrive.

Keep the distinction between check-in and the testing room clear. You need your confirmation for arrival, but the room rule limits personal items to ID. Organize what you bring so you can retrieve the documents and then put the other items away without searching through loose papers.

In the room: check the headset and use notes sparingly

CELPIP’s test-day page says a headset, microphone, pen and notepaper are provided, along with a QWERTY keyboard. You may hear other candidates speaking and typing. Use the unscored Speaking practice task to check that you are comfortable speaking into the microphone. Raise your hand if you need help with the equipment or anything else.

For Listening, try short notes that preserve the speaker’s point and any changed decision. A page of copied words can be difficult to use when you need to choose an answer. For Reading, use a brief note only when it helps you keep track of information or viewpoints. The Listening and Reading guides offer practice routines.

For Speaking preparation, write a few prompts for your ideas rather than attempting a complete script. Keep your note layout simple enough to read at a glance. CELPIP requires the pen and notepaper to be returned at the end, so treat them as working materials for the sitting.

Manage each component and the clock during breaks

CELPIP’s format information says Listening audio plays once and you cannot return to earlier parts. Keep moving with the recording after a missed detail. In Reading, check that your selected answer is supported by the text before leaving the part. Practise these habits through free practice before test day.

Writing gives 27 minutes for the email and 26 for the survey response, each 150–200 words. Use the word counter and leave room for a final read. In Speaking, recording begins automatically when preparation ends. Be ready with your opening and finish the thought you are developing before adding another. The Writing and Speaking hubs explain these formats.

CELPIP’s test-day page says the timer keeps running during washroom breaks; being away more than 20 minutes terminates the test. Food and drink are not allowed in the lab. Ask the supervisor for water when needed, understanding that the clock continues. Raise your hand to request help and follow staff directions.

After the test: return materials and report issues promptly

Return the provided pen and notepaper as directed. If a test-day problem occurred, CELPIP’s Test Day Information says to report it through your CELPIP Account within 24 hours.ca. Do not wait for the score report to decide whether to record an issue.

For a useful report, describe the problem plainly: the component involved, what happened, when you noticed it and whether you raised your hand. Distinguish what you observed from what you think caused it. Keep a copy of the information you submit so you can answer any follow-up consistently.

For routine follow-up, read the results guide for account access, the PDF report and published timing. If you plan further practice, make a short private note of the skill you found difficult, such as pacing or organizing ideas. Use that observation to choose an exercise without trying to reconstruct the test questions.
